| The Nutrigenomics Consortium (NGC) focuses on diet-related metabolic stress, the early and reversible stage of metabolic syndrome. The related symptoms are obesity, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Metabolic syndrome greatly increases the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. The consortium aims to increase our understanding of the events unfolding during metabolic stress, and the ultimate objective is to discover and validate molecular biomarkers for the early detection of metabolic stress. Since the effects of nutrition on health and disease cannot be understood without a profound understanding of how nutrients act at molecular and genetic level, the consortium therefore combines molecular nutrition research with state-of-the-art genomics.
