 Young Investigators Award 01-07 Bart Pennings (A-1002) won a Young Investigator Award at the Congress of the European College of Sport Science (ECSS) in Antalya, Turkey. Bart presented part of his PhD work, in which sophisticated stable isotope tracer methodology is being used to assess dietary protein digestion and absorption kinetics and subsequent muscle protein synthesis rates in elderly humans. more »
 Genes responsible for the positive effects of probiotics identified 22-06For the first time ever, genes responsible for beneficial effects on human health in bacteria have been identified. The genes enable probiotics to stimulate cells of the immune system in a positive way. After contact with probiotics the immune cells produced substances which result in a better regulation of the human immune system. These are the conclusions of research of TI Food and Nutrition, carried out by NIZO food research, TNO, University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and Wageningen University and Research Center. more »

Probiotic bacteria in drinks adapt in human intestine 10-06For the first time ever researchers could measure these bacterial changes. The aim of this fundamental research was to get a better understanding of the properties of drinks with probiotic bacteria. Researchers of Top Institute Food and Nutrition (TIFN) in Wageningen will publish the results of the study in ISME Journal this week, the official journal for microbiologists. more »
 Bacteria in the large intestine play positive role in weight management 04-06Short-chain fatty acids such as propionic acid, which are produced by bacteria in the large intestine, can improve the health status of fat tissue in the body. When fat tissue comes in contact with propionate the tissue produces the satiety hormone leptin. more »

 TIFN names new Programme Director, Sensory & Structure 27-04Professor van der Linden will combine this new appointment at TIFN with his position as Professor of Food Physics and Physical Chemistry of Foods in Wageningen University and Research Centre. He has held this position as Head of the Laboratory of Food Physics in the Agrotechnology and Food Sciences Group in the university since 1998. As well as stimulating research and teaching, he has established a network of research collaboration within the Netherlands and also with food companies worldwide. more »

It has been completed under the supervision of Prof. Dr. F. Kuipers and Prof. Dr. M. Müller.

Presentation to EC in Brussels 26-03According to Harmen de Jongh, the group expressed considerable interest in TIFN and its substantial role as a public-private partnership in the food and nutrition debate and action on obesity. There is particular interest in our comprehensive approach which covers not only the physical considerations in food product reformulation but also aspects such as food sensory attributes, satiation, metabolic responses and gut health. The link between TIFN and FND and the supportive role of the Dutch government in strengthening the food sector at all levels in the Netherlands was considered of great value. more »

 European Support for Willem de Vos 28-01European Research Council
The European Research Council (ERC) was set up in 2007 to enhance the quality of academic research in all disciplines in European countries. This is the second time the Advanced Grants competition prize has been awarded. ERC finances excellent, bottom-up and ground-breaking research.The Netherlands were awarded sixteen times. Prof. Kafatos, who chairs the ERC, believes in investing in the most talented people, this being even more essential during an economic recession as it can have a positive effect on Europe and its economy

 New Year’s meeting 12-01The TIFN New Year’s meeting on Monday January 11 was attended by around fifty persons from all TIFN levels. In his speech managing director Jan Maat looked back on the highlights of the past year, but also portrayed what lies ahead in the coming year.
The Cabinet’s commitment of 40 million Euros for 2011-2015 is the foundation for TIFN’s continuation. Additionally, several new partners recently signed a Letter of Intent and the transition from programmes to themes is in progress. TIFN is ready for the next step. more »
