Many of the current farming systems are not sustainable in the long term. Regenerative farming business models aims to develop proofs-of-concepts for how regenerative production can be achieved within one generation, from both biophysical and socio-economic perspectives.

An integrated systems approach towards sustainable food production is the aim of Regenerative farming. The project will deliver outlines for a revised Netherlands’ agricultural system, for best practices and robust, quantified scenarios for a national-level transition.

Agricultural production worldwide faces huge challenges to achieve the UN Sustainability Development Goals and international agreements with respect to environment (depletion of scarce resources, global warming, acidification, eutrophication, nutrient losses, and biodiversity loss), labour (availability of skilled workers), and society (consumer/societal acceptance of production methods and novel technology). Further optimization of current farming practices with precision agriculture and precision livestock farming technologies will not be sufficient to meet these challenges.
